How Much Should a Small Business Spend on Meta Ads in 2026?

There's no universal number, but there is a real formula. Here's how to set a Meta Ads budget that's big enough to learn from but small enough to stay safe.

Skip the "$X per day" answers

Most answers to this question throw out a flat number like "$20/day" or "$1,000/month" without context. The real answer depends on your average order value, your margin, and how many conversions you need before the algorithm has enough data to optimize.

The minimum viable test budget

Meta's system needs roughly 50 conversions per ad set per week to exit the learning phase reliably. Work backward from that:

  • Estimate your realistic cost-per-result based on your industry (ballpark, not exact)
  • Multiply that by 50 to get your minimum weekly budget for one ad set
  • If that number is uncomfortable, your offer or margin needs work before ads will fix anything

A simple starting framework

  • Under $2k/month revenue: test with $300-500/month, one campaign, one audience, tight focus
  • $2k-10k/month revenue: $500-1,500/month, enough to run 2-3 creative tests in parallel
  • $10k+/month revenue: 5-10% of revenue is a reasonable starting allocation, adjusted once you know your numbers

What matters more than the number

  • Whether your landing page already converts cold traffic before you scale spend
  • Whether you can produce new creative regularly — an under-resourced budget with great creative often beats a bigger budget with stale ads
  • Whether you're tracking down to actual revenue, not just cost-per-click

The bottom line

There's no universal safe number. There's a minimum needed to gather real data, and a ceiling set by what you can afford to lose while you learn. Start at the minimum, prove the math works, then scale.
