Performance Max isn't inherently good or bad

Performance Max automates campaign type, placement, and audience decisions across Google's entire inventory. That's powerful when you have enough conversion data to feed it, and risky when you don't — the automation is only as good as the signal behind it.

Where Performance Max tends to win

  • Ecommerce accounts with a solid product feed and enough historical conversion data across many SKUs
  • Advertisers who lack the bandwidth to manage Search, Shopping, Display, and YouTube as separate campaigns manually
  • Accounts already hitting strong ROAS on standard Shopping, looking for incremental volume beyond what manual campaigns capture

Where it tends to waste budget

  • New accounts with little conversion history — Pmax needs data to make good decisions, and a cold account gives it very little to work with
  • Service businesses with a narrow, specific buyer where broad automated targeting pulls in too much irrelevant traffic
  • Accounts that can't tolerate opaque reporting — Pmax's search term visibility is much more limited than standard Search campaigns

How to use it without losing control

Performance Max works best as an addition to a well-structured account, not a replacement for it. Advertisers seeing "Pmax doesn't work" results are usually launching it in an account without enough data or without the negative keyword guardrails it needs.
